Ketamine blocks NMDA receptors, involved in the transmission of pain signals and mood regulation, leading to an increase in the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain, glutamate, and a dreamlike state that alters the perception of time and space. The podcast emphasizes the importance of ongoing support for patients after treatment, as well as the need to treat the root cause of mental health issues, not just the symptoms. Mental health professionals need to incorporate other elements of mental health treatment, including counseling and EMDR, along with psychedelic treatments.
